How do we know we have enough nutrients to maximise our body functions? What criteria must be considered when we prepare our meals? What is defined by an ideal plate?

The ideal plate is achieved by taking into consideration the quality of food, balance between both macronutrients and micronutrients, variety of food groups and quantity of each type. The ideal plate concept is generally the same although it varies slightly depending on the needs of the individual.

WHAT ARE SOME TIPS TO ACHIEVE AN IDEAL PLATE?

Here are my tips, which are also recommended by The Ministry of Health Malaysia. Try practicing the Malaysian Healthy Plate also known as the quarter quarter half diet ! This type of measuring method is easy and very achievable. It can be easily followed by all groups of people, be it children, adults or even the older generation. If the diet is easy, the chances of sticking to it increases!

How do we achieve the quarter quarter half diet? First, fill a quarter of the plate with lean protein. It could be fish, chicken or any plant protein source if you are a vegetarian. Then, fill another quarter of the plate with source of carbohydrates such as rice/grains, wheat, cereals, etc., and the other half of the plate with fruits and vegetables.

However, if you'd like to have a little snack after your meals, that's okay too! Personally, I would recommend a cultured milk drink as it has a reasonable caloric content, making it a healthy addition to most diets. Cultured milk drink also helps to improve digestion, gives anti-inflammatory effects and has stimulating antioxidants. My go-to cultured milk drink is Calpis!

Calpis also comes in different variants, the good ol' Original, Mango, Grape and even Strawberry! If you are in the mood for something more exciting and fun, there's even a Calpis Chewy range which contains Nata de Coco! Snacking time is not only fun but also gives our digestive system all the benefits! So, lets stick to the quarter quarter half diet and do not forget to include a healthy and fun snack in between meals!
